Description:

A Pair, of Art Deco Sylvia Stave Candlesticks Pewter, C. G. Hallberg (Sweden, 1940).

About the Designer:

Sylvia Stave, born Sylvia Gadd in 1908 in Växjö, arrived in Stockholm at the age of 21, where she began studying at the College of Industrial Arts at the Stockholm Technical School (later Konstfack). Stave soon applied to C.G. Hallberg and, after a successful participation in the Stockholm Exhibition, became the firm's artistic director at just 23.

During a brief but intense period of about ten years, she designed various objects for Hallberg in pewter, silver, and nickel silver, using an austere and pure design language, typical for the period, with a preference for sculptural and refined geometric elements, but avoiding unnecessary decorative additions.

At the age of 31, she left Sweden to live as a housewife in France, leaving her flourishing career behind. For a long time, the name Stave was known only to a select few, but Alessi's reproduction of the cocktail shaker in the late 1980s marked the beginning of a renewed interest in his art, despite his designs initially being mistakenly marketed as the work of Bauhaus icon Marianne Brandt. Today, Stave enjoys international acclaim among collectors and museum institutions, both for his pure design language and his enigmatic personality.
